Ich will alles wissen!

A word about my Spike branches
So that I don't have to keep answering this question multiple times every day....I am no longer posting customized versions that include Spike app modifications.
ALSO important to start this conversation...Spike has never officially been supported by Loop. The use of Spike-Loop has been a long-standing "DIY work-around" that people have been doing on their own...so please don't frame this as "Loop is no longer supporting Spike" because in actuality, Loop has never supported Spike natively. If you've used Spike with Loop, it was always because edits to the official Loop app had been made, either by you or someone else willing to do that work for you.
The Loop developers have their reasons for not including all the requested features that cross their desks. Many times, we (the general population of Loop users) may not be aware of all the underlying issues or reasons. The following statements are MY summary of what I've seen and read over the last year about this topic...not that they've ever been summarized in one spot and not that they represent the direct quotes from anyone in particular. So here's the parts that you may not be aware of (1) Spike plays a small audio to try to prevent Spike from being shut down by iOS in the background. That technique is not part of apple development standards (and Loop supports apple development standards). (2) The internal server with Spike is also less stable than simply connecting Loop via the Dexcom app (for many people..not everyone gets spike drops, but I sure know I've spent quite a bit of time answering spike drop posts). (3) Spike does not use the calibration algorithms for CGMs that were developed and trialed by the manufacturers of those products. So, calibration/accuracy issues may arise in situations that Spike does not handle like the official apps for those devices do. Since insulin dosing really depends on accurate sensors, this is a significant concern that I am particularly sensitive to. Spike doesn't use Libre's algorithm, nor Dexcom's. Spike applies it's own calibrations to the raw data from the sensors. There have been no clinical trials on those changes to calibration algorithms; how will they behave or in which situations might be most variable from expected behaviors (like changes in temperature or changes in sensor duration). Tim Street has posted some interesting recent articles about sensor restarts for example and that's a good example about thinking or questioning how "our" off-label uses may impact user-facing data...and whether the benefits offset risks when using automated insulin dosing. (side note: xdrip also similarly uses off-label algorithms)
Loop developers make a lot of decisions necessarily about what features are included or not included. Lots of "stuff" ends up on the cutting room floor for lots of reasons. In this case, developers appear to really be wanting to stick to "official" CGMs, apps, and their calibrated algorithms because...well, this is automated insulin dosing and that's kind of a big deal to think about.
But, here's the cool part about DIY...you can pick the pieces off the cutting room floor and make your own if you want. Yes, it may take some work, and yes, you may have to learn some new skills. I spent probably 6 months getting to know git and github and made LOADS of mistakes in the learning process (still do!). If google charged me by the search, I'd be below broke. I have several pieces of work that ended up on the cutting room floor, just like Spike has, and I keep picking those up because (for now) they still provide me value.
You can still pick up the Spike pieces from the cutting room floor yourself. The instructions in Spike App are currently outdated (they work only for Loop v1.9.3 and older). So, since Loop v1.9.4 and later, there is a completely different way to integrate CGMs...spike app included.
The change that happened was the addition of "under the hood" code that changed how CGM managers are done in Loop. Lots of files moved around and changed. Basically, the changes are a lot for the positive...allowing new "slots" for new CGMs to be added more easily when they are Loop-compatible.
One community member, dabear, undertook the work and submitted a pull request (PR) to Loop for the new way of adding Spike to Loop v1.9.4. You can read the PR notes here.
https://github.com/LoopKit/Loop/pull/828
So, in summary, yes...things have changed. But, it's not official Loop app that has changed anything. Just that I'm not pre-packaging the Spike changes anymore. It takes a lot of time to keep customizations up-to-date when Loop code changes. Add to that, the various permutations that people ask for each time, Spike just adds another time management challenge to my plate. And, dabear has said he won't have time to always make quick updates to the spike integrations as Loop updates...and I don't want to be caught in the middle of always answering the questions/doing the work for so many projects that may/may not be maintained. So, I'm scaling back to just the customizations that I intend to use personally again (I don't use spike...but I have been super busy with omnipod work, so there's only so much time in a day). Figure out if Spike is something you want to continue using, and if so read that PR, look at the files changed, how they were changed and start playing. This is still a DIY project, and you can pick up the pieces if you decide they have value to you when they don't make it into official Loop app.
My one request is to make sure you change your info.plist files for customized builds as described in the photo attached. As a troubleshooter, this helps me TREMENDOUSLY. Please do this step. if you do, then the new version name will show in your Issue Reports, in your download folder's names, and in your Loop app itself. All of those places are places that I regularly am using when I do troubleshooting for your build errors (and hence why I ask for full window screenshots...one of the lines I look at is that one bit of info).

-IRC (Integral Retrospective Correction)
https://github.com/LoopKit/Loop/issues/695
